Shirley Marks, MD, MPH, DLFAPA is a native Texan. She is a board certified Psychiatrist. She will celebrate her 50th Harvard Medical School Reunion in June 2023, having graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1973. Dr. Marks is the first Spelman College alumna to graduate from HMS and the second Black female to graduate from HMS. She completed her Psychiatry Residency at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. She furthered her studies in mental health and community psychiatry with a Masters of Public Health in Behavioral Sciences from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Marks has received several awards and academic appointments. Since completion of medical school, she has remained active in organized medicine and mental health associations. Her interest in treating special populations such as veterans of 5 wars, women, survivors of trauma, and the incarcerated in federal and state facilities has made her a spokesperson for destigmatizing mental illness and a leader in program development  and policy implementation.

Dr. Marks retired from the Veterans Affairs Health Care System.  In 2022 she retired from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Correctional Managed Care as Regional Director of Behavioral Health Services.
