In addition to her faculty position in the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Durant has a secondary appointment within the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine (DOPM). Dr. Nefertiti Durant is a scientist at the UAB Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE) and the UAB Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC). She is a member of UAB’s Clinical Nutrition Research Center and the Minority Health Research Center. She is a junior investigator for the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA). Dr. Durant’s clinical practice is located within the UAB Division of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Durant received her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County where she was a Meyerhoff Scholar. She then graduated from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2000 and completed residency training in Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center in 2003. Dr. Durant completed her M.P.H. degree at the Harvard School of Public Health as a CFHU Fellow in 2004. As part of that fellowship, Dr. Durant conducted research with the Health Resource Services Administration/Bureau of Primary Health Care on Obesity in Federally-Funded Community Health Centers. Dr. Durant has also completed fellowships at Children’s Hospital of Boston in Adolescent Medicine and Pediatric Health Services Research.
Dr. Durant is committed to health promotion in young African American women and other underserved populations. Her research focuses on promotion of physical activity and reduction of health disparities in obesity using innovative internet technology based interventions.
